Author: Dr. Burnett, Charles

Price:
$9.50
ISBN: 0966226631
[Add to Cart] [View Cart]
This is a special edition of the previous work published by Brill. Edited by Cornelius, Tobyn, and Wells under Dr. Burnett's supervision, this edition of the Abbreviation, (also known as the Lesser Introduction) has been specially prepared for the use of astrologers interested in both the techniques and their history. Extensive notes have been added to the text explaining all of the important technical terms and their history. The translation from the Arabic (which forms the basis of this edition) has been cross-referenced to the Latin translation of Adelard of Bath so as to supply portions missing from the Arabic as well to note differences between the Latin and the Arabic no doubt resulting from different manuscript traditions. This was one of the most important introductory texts for both Arabic and Latin astrologers. And it is now accessible to the astrological community.

Title: Arabic Parts In Astrology: The Lost Keys To Prediction.
Author: Zoller, Robert

Price:
$16.95
ISBN: 0892812508
[Add to Cart] [View Cart]
Dating from antiquity, the doctrine of the Arabic parts has been virtually lost to Western astrological practice since the 17th century. In his book, Robert Zoller retrieves this valuable key to prediction and provides a clear and simple guide to its practical application. The Arabic parts enable the astrologer to investigate the "inner" meaning of the horoscope and thus to go beyond the "outer" aspects expressed by the arrangement of the planets, signs, and houses. The first section of the book explains how fate, or karma, can be understood through the parts and the esoteric nature of number. The second section includes a translation of the 13th century Latin text on the parts by the famed court astrologer, Bonatti; this work includes the basic ninety-seven parts, dealing with all areas of life--from war, commodities speculation, and professional life to marriage and partnerships--in addition to seventy-three parts from various medieval sources. In the third section of the book, the author illustrates the practical use of the parts in natal, horary, and mundane astrology. His understanding of the parts and their place in a comprehensive interpretation of any horoscope is presented with lucidity and insight, unraveling for the reader this fascinating and long-neglected astrological science.

Rabbi Moshe Ben Maimon, aka Maimonides, was born in Cordoba, Spain, in 1135. He eventually settled in Cairo, where he became the leading authority on religious matters, establishing the foundations of Jewish theology. He was famous far & wide. In 1194 he wrote a response to two letters sent to him by a group of rabbis in southern France. They wanted to know the validity of astrology as it related to the Jewish faith. Their letters contained many detailed questions. Maimonides ignored the first letter, replying only when prodded by the second. Maimonides's response ignored the details, going directly to a religious & philosophical discussion where he condemns astrology outright. These documents are an example of how astrology & religion differed in ancient times, and reminds us that the argument of fate vs: free will has never been resolved in the west.

$14.95
ISBN: L3073 – 034

In this exciting new book, Dr. Lehman recovers an important ancient aspect of astrology which has become misunderstood and diluted; rulerships. By attempting to simplify astrology, contemporary sources have completely obscured the essential differences between planet, sign, and house. While the novice may benefit from this simplification, much of the old logic of the rulership system is covered up. By researching ancient manuscripts and sources, the ancient system of essential dignities or planetary rulerships is recovered and made available once again to the contemporary astrologer. What was nearly lost is given new power and the potential for understanding. A wealth of information is presented in a clear and concise way with many accurate charts.

Julius Firmicus Maternus, a native of Sicily, was a Roman lawyer of the senatorial class. He lived from c.280 to c.360. He was a student of Greek astrology, which forms the basis of this book. Firmicus wrote for his patron, one Quintus Flavius Maesius Lollianus Egnatius, known in the book as Mavortius. Firmicus differs from Ptolemy (two centuries earlier) in that he employs houses & his work is practical, where Ptolemy is theoretical. Recent study has shown Firmicus's Matheseos to be a more comprehensive survey of Greek astrology than Ptolemy's earlier Tetrabiblos. Roman civilization faded soon after Firmicus, his manuscript lay ignored for centuries. The Matheseos, along with many other Classical works, was rediscovered in the Middle Ages. It was studied by generations of astrologers, from around 1000 AD, to the astrological twilight of the late 1600's. The celebrated English astrologer, William Lilly (1602-1681), had a copy in his library. Jean Rhys Bram's 1975 translation was a precursor of the astrological revival that started in the mid-1990's & continues to the present. This is also one of the best-translated books we have seen. The English is modern, clear & direct.

Title: Practical Guide To Traditional Astrology:
Author: Crane, Joseph

$14.95
ISBN: 0966226615

This is a well-written summary of and introduction to the methods of early astrology that have gained renewed attention due to the recent translation work of Rob Hand, Bob Zoller and Robert Schmidt. While much, though certainly not all, contained here is regular fare for practicing horary astrologers (those of the Lilly school that is), readers who have concentrated only on natal or mundane astrology (the vast majority I suspect) will find Crane's clear explanations are well worth studying. Combine this booklet with Neugenbauer's Greek Horoscopes or even Lilly's Christian Astrology and one's whole view of how to astrologize is likely to radically change overnight. In varying states of health and public acceptance, astrology has been around now for many millennia. Today's psychological trend, while obviously containing much of great value, has departed in many important ways from the initial process with which astrology had its long-ago beginnings. Studying the past does not mean rejection of the present - only a fool would advocate anything of that nature - but knowledge of how matters were originally handled can only add immeasurably to any astrologer's expertise. Joseph Crane's A Practical Guide to Traditional Astrology provides a very readable setting point to this whole exciting area.

In the whole sign house system, the degree of the zodiac found on the ascendant is not the beginning of the first house, which extends before as well as after the cusp. The first house - and all the other houses in the chart - start with 0 degrees & end with 30 degrees of the sign in question. The degree on the cusp is the most intense point of the house. The degree on the other house cusps is generally taken to be the same as the ascending degree, eg, whole sign houses resemble equal houses, the difference is that equal houses start & end at the cusp, whole sign houses start at 0 degrees of the sign on the cusp & end 30 degrees later. This means the midheaven (MC) is unrelated to any house cusp, there are no intercepted signs nor intercepted houses.

Dorotheus of Sidon, who appears to have lived in Alexandria, flourished in the first century AD. He wrote his Pentateuch (five books) on astrology in Greek, in verse. This translation, from 1976 by David Pingree, is from a fourth century Pahlavi (Persian) source.

The first book is on the judgement of nativities. Book two concerns marriage and children. Book three is on the length of life. Book four is on the transfer of years, i.e., forecasting. Book five is on interrogations, i.e., electional astrology.

In this book are the earliest known astrological charts. Dorotheus bases much of his interpretative methods on the triplicity rulers, by day and by night. All fire signs have the same rulers. All earth signs have their rulers, as do air and water signs. He uses Egyptian terms. He, like the Greeks of his day, also uses the Dodecatemoria, which are the twelfths of a sign. And many, many lots, all defined.

For the first time in this edition: Pingree's Preface newly translated. An appendix with charts in modern format. A complete table of terms and triplicity rulers. A table to calculate Dodecatemoria.

Writing a century before Ptolemy, here is the mainstream of Greek astrology. It will handsomely repay close study.

By Rabbi Avraham Ibn Ezra, translated by Meira B. Epstein, and edited by Robert Hand.

Excerpt from Robert Hand's foreword: 'With this and subsequent translations of Ibn Ezra's works we have our first translations directly from the original language of Arabic Era astrology. Although Ibn Ezra was a Jew and wrote in Hebrew, his astrology is mainstream Arabic Era astrology completely free of the modifications that were often made of Arabic astrology by the Christians who translated the Arabic works into Latin. Also because these translations are directly from the Hebrew, we have eliminated a layer of translation and the errors that can occur in any translation of a translation.'
